Can I be present when my friend serves the guy I am suing?

I know the plaintiff is not allowed to serve the defendant in my state but is the plaintiff allowed to be present when the defendant is being served? The defendant is avoiding being served so I would like to help in the search. Is it ok that I tag along in the search?
