Why is the death penalty so expensive?

I was just reading an article about the casey anthony trial and it said in Florida it is $51 million a year, or about $24 million per execution. It is death by lethal injection, why is it so expensive? Does this cost include their stay in the prison while on death row, or just the cost to execute them?
