If we have a representative government why is the majority of our representatives attorney?

A recent case in point. I read an article in the newspaper( hopefully it was correct) where an attorney received over $2 million fee while plaintiffs received $59,000 dollars. To make it worse it appeared that the defendant was exonerated in the case from the article. Everybody in other professions seems to have a standard for fees and charges except attorneys. Why do you suppose that happens and what can be done about it? It's completely out of control. These are not isolated cases. Response by attorneys or laymen would be appreciated. I would like to see the pros and cons for statistical purposes. Thanks.
