What is the average amount awarded to a plaintiff in a malpractice suit?

My friend has a mom who's heart was operated on and the doctor admitted it was his fault because they were not careful when taking her off this machine. Anyway, she lost her sight and they are filing a malpractice suit. Now, my friend has a tendency to color the details quite a bit. She said that they should be able to settle out of court for $20 million dollars. Is this a reasonable amount? Like, is it actually possible for them to get that without going to court??
